The Smallegange Family

The historian Mattheus Smallegange (1620-1704) wrote, among other things, the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland (New Zeeland Cronicles), an authoritative work in the fields of cartography and heraldry.
In the cronicles Smallegange describes, among other things, his own extensive genealogy, beginning in the 12th century with Sir Arent With The Belly (p. 737).
Mattheus died childless and later on many Smalleganges (and also Augusteijns) have tried to prove kinship between themselves and the Smallegange family as described in the cronicles.
As far as I know nobody succeeded. (See: Polderman/Harthoorn, Het nieuwe geslachtsboek Smallegange, Amsterdam 1953). In the forties a Smallegange society existed. My father was a member.

About 1300 Willem van Smallegange adopted this coat of arms:

Translation of the devices:
PER ANGUSTA AD AUGUSTA:Through narrows (smalle gangen!) to elevation
CANDOR QUI TENEBRIS FULGET DAT SIDERA COELO:The white light that shines in the darkness (black) gives stars in heaven (blue).
